Daiwa's new ETF stacks gold and Treasuries in one ticker
The Tokyo-listed iFreeETF Gold plus Income turns a gold-and-Treasury allocation into a single rules-based benchmark.
Daiwa's latest Tokyo listing packages a two-asset decision into a single rules-based benchmark. According to ETF Express, iFreeETF Gold plus Income listed September 4 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under ticker 626A, tracking the Solactive Gold Plus 7-10Y US Treasury Stacked Index, which combines Solactive's US 7-10 Year Treasury Bond Index with a 5-day roll gold futures index and is designed to reflect 100 per cent of the daily performance of each component.
Solactive's case for the pairing is that Treasuries answer to interest rates while gold answers to inflation expectations, currency moves, geopolitical developments, and investor demand during stretches of uncertainty, so the two can play complementary roles as the macro backdrop changes. Daiwa executive managing director Yuji Mori said the fund gives Japanese investors efficient access to two asset classes already used widely around the world, and Solactive chief markets officer Timo Pfeiffer described the listing as a continuation of the two firms' collaboration.
An investor who wants both already has routes to get there—two separate funds or a multi-asset product. Daiwa's version embeds the combination in the index's own construction rules, so the buyer is getting the pairing as a predetermined product rather than assembling it and deciding how to weight it over time.
The launch extends a run of Solactive-powered products PWD has tracked, including Deutsche's short-duration high-yield fund on HYLB's index and the defense-tilted CAMO fund. Daiwa's version goes further because the index is performing an asset-allocation function rather than simply selecting securities. That makes the fund a test of whether an ETF can sell a portfolio decision as easily as it sells a market exposure—and the real wager is that Japanese investors are ready to buy an allocation rather than build one.
