Xtrackers keeps its name in Deutsche Asset Management rebrand

DWS becomes a home-market active brand while Xtrackers carries the group's global passive franchise under a new institutional umbrella.

Beginning early November, the asset manager will operate under Deutsche Asset Management as its global umbrella brand, putting a familiar name back on top, the firm announced this week. DWS survives only as the label for its active European private wealth business, Xtrackers keeps the global ETF and passive mandates franchise, and RREEF retains the US real estate expertise. Chief executive Stefan Hoops puts DWS's history at 70 years of active management and RREEF's at more than 50 years in real estate.

Most existing product names are unchanged, but the endorsement changes: from November, Xtrackers and other product brands will carry a 'by Deutsche Asset Management' line, tying them to a platform the firm positions as the Gateway to Europe for international and institutional clients. Deutsche Asset Management will be used directly for institutional clients and private markets services, the areas where the parent name is the sales tool.

Hoops says the new name already has immediate international recognition and is well known to institutional clients globally, while the DWS label is being concentrated on its home market, where active management has depth. Xtrackers, he adds, has already established a strong stand-alone ETF and passive mandates brand and will benefit from being part of a larger Deutsche Asset Management family.

Xtrackers is the only one of the three product brands described with a global mandate, while DWS is being pulled back toward Germany and core Europe. The corporate identity probably matters less to an advisor who already has Xtrackers on a platform list than to institutional gatekeepers deciding whether the name behind a fund belongs in a mandate review. The group says the umbrella aims at international and institutional clients, which suggests where the payoff is expected.

The move follows a strategic cycle the firm laid out at its 2022 capital markets day, a run that included entry to the MDAX in March 2025 and ended at the start of this year. Days before the branding announcement, DWS listed two active euro credit ETFs in London under the Xtrackers name, giving the new umbrella a fresh product pair to present in November.

Separating product brand from umbrella may simplify the selling job. Xtrackers' message stays centered on funds and construction, while Deutsche Asset Management can carry the size and continuity arguments in committee rooms; those are distinct conversations, and the rebrand gives the firm a different name for each.

The endorsement does not change how an Xtrackers fund is built or priced; it changes the sentence the firm leads with. Rather than explain DWS, the group can say Deutsche Asset Management, a name its chief executive says institutional clients already know. Xtrackers remains Xtrackers: DWS is betting the product brand keeps investor equity while the parent name opens the institutional door.
