Micron earnings loom over iShares VLUE's 23.5% Micron position

ETF Trends ranks two 2x single-stock funds and iShares VLUE as the largest ETF exposures to Micron, which reports Wednesday.

Micron Technology reports earnings Wednesday at the end of a year in which the stock has risen 237%, enough to lift a semiconductor into the top slot of the iShares MSCI USA Value Factor ETF. ETF Trends has rounded up the three funds it says offer the largest exposure to the stock, and they split into two kinds: the GraniteShares 2x Long MU Daily ETF (MULL) and the Direxion Daily MU Bull 2X ETF (MUU) both target twice Micron's daily return, while VLUE is a plain index fund whose largest position happens to be a memory-chip maker. The article frames the print as a marker for the AI trade and the wider tech industry.

That 23.5% is the number worth pausing on. VLUE charges 15 basis points to track the MSCI USA Enhanced Value index, and iShares data cited in the article puts Micron at 23.5% of the fund against 4.1% for the next-largest holding. The fund has returned 47.2% year to date, per ETF Database, which is how an advisor who bought VLUE for a diversified value factor ends up carrying a quarter-position in one chipmaker, and no amount of index methodology reads that away.

The two leveraged funds offer the cleaner comparison: MULL charges 150 basis points for its 2x exposure, MUU charges 101, and over the past month ETF Database has them at 23.6% and 23.5%, which leaves 49 basis points of fee as the practical difference between two products doing the same job. Both are down about 29% over three months, the volatility the article says makes MULL a daily, tactical tool rather than a holding.

Single-stock leverage has been a moving shelf all year. GraniteShares placed four funds in the top nine of a leveraged leaderboard we covered in September, and the 2x single-stock business has started to look like an inventory operation, with issuers filing on new names and closing funds almost as quickly. Micron is a sturdier underlying than the drone makers and bitcoin miners on that part of the shelf, since it reports earnings rather than a narrative, but the daily-reset arithmetic is the same, and Direxion's targeted chip funds already showed in September how fast a semiconductor trade that moves as one story can reprice.

What Wednesday's print does to VLUE's 23.5% is the question the two leveraged funds do not face. MULL and MUU reset daily around a single target; an index fund's weights change on the index's timetable, not the advisor's. If Micron moves hard, the largest position in a 15-basis-point factor fund will be the thing moving.

Forty-nine basis points of fee is the practical difference between two products doing the same job, and that is before either of them has traded on the print.
